Return of the GRL

Wow. So, if you’ve been anywhere on the internet (and when I say “anywhere on the internet” what I mean is geek and tech blogs) you’ll have seen at least one of the many videos of efforts of the Graffiti Research Lab (GRL). Although they really have no affiliation with Adult Swim, Sean Stevens, or Peter Berdovsky since the incident that happened around the Boston metro area in February (CNN Article | GRL comments) GRL’s site has seen a noteable influx of traffic.

I’d like to take this time to point out that the very first Mermaids Heart Robots post ever was about GRL. I feel special.

The Graffiti Research Lab is has a gallery exhibit in NYC going on now! Check it out if you’re in the area. Open City

(note: I have just recently seen the articles published on Wired and CoolHunting regarding the projects of the GRL before MHR was ever conceived. *sigh* So much for being a tastemaker.)

We make the world go ’round, too.

Faithful Robot Companion

Everyone just needs a little love, despite whether or not you carry a pulse. Check out more work by Bradley W. Schenck.

Mermaids love ‘Pirates’ too.

ship concept art Yes, definitely. Mermaids are very fond of pirates, although I don’t think those scallywags like mermaids too much. Everytime I hear a pirate talk about a mermaid it’s usually something along the lines of “Them evil fish women lured old John Jacobjingleheimerschmidt overboard and nobody heared from him since, yar!”

I’ll have you know, though, that this mermaid loves pirates, and their booties. In fact, this mermaid is anxiously awaiting the release of the Pirates of the Carribbean movie. The official website for the movie features some of the concept art and designs for the movie, that is, if you can find them. You’ve heard of Davey Jones’ locker, yes? Well this, my land lovers, is Davey Jones. Isn’t he dreamy? On the site you’ll also find a lot of other illustrations and art that I deem “imaginatively responsible” meaning they did good.

If Tim Burton’s Vincent was a robot…

RustBoyHe would look like RustBoy, and I would love him just as much.

One night while laying on the operating table RustBoy is struck by lightning and comes to life. Um, there is a boat and a dream sequence at some point. Frankly, that’s really all we know of the story because it is still a work in progress. Regardless, from what I’ve seen (and read) about the movie, I’m quite excited.

You can pick up your own RustBoy at a little webstore called Android 8.

Vandalism or G33|< 4R7?

The Graffiti Research Lab has taken the time honored tradition of graffiti into the 21st century. Artists from G.R.L. prototyped and produced L.E.D. “throwies”.

The throwies are actually little glowing sticks of happiness. Their happiness is composed of “a lithium battery, a 10mm diffused LED and a rare-earth magnet taped together”.

Who would have thought happiness could be so simple?
