HOW TO - Make a keyboard circuit wallet

If you’ve got old computers laying around that aren’t old enough to be antiques but not new enough to be functional you can turn them into stuff… that’s right, stuff!

From Instructables, comes this tutorial on how to deconstruct an old desktop keyboard to create a new money holder, a.k.a wallet.

Freakin’ sweet, right? I’ve looked it and you might need to cannibalize two keyboards to make this wallet. Of course they also suggest that you can make a checkbook cover and it seems like that would require less materials. Also, if you’re techy but not necessarily so crafty there’s no sewing invoved so as long as you have knowledge of how to cut and tape, you’re all set.

They also offer some suggestions on what to do with the other parts of the keyboard:

Keys - make magnets, clocks, or notes to loved ones (I Ctrl U!)
Plastic casing - If your area accepts #6 or 7 plastics for recycling do that.
Metal - Recycle as scrap or use as a surface for projects that use glue, solder, or other messy activities.

LED Coffee Tables

I just realized I never made a post about Wired’s NextFest 2007 that I attended this summer. I wanted to reference it in this post… but it does not exist. Anyway, these twinkly LED coffee table creations from Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories and Because We Can totally remind me of an exhibit I saw at NextFest. The tables are modded to light up when the motion sensors are triggered. Thanks to these pictures now I really want to make one and now I’m thinking I should probably attend the next Maker Faire.

Check out more cool shit from Because We Can and Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories.

PSA!

Well maybe it’s only a public service announcement if you consider this blog a public service. I really don’t think any0ne does, so really, it’s just a PA.

I have a confession to make.

I started this blog because I was (and still am) working at an internet company where everyday I would look at sites like The Fabulist and NotCot and think, “Wow, that sure is cool. I want to make a list of cool stuff too… maybe then people will like me.” I also wanted to be a finder of cool things so I decided to make THIS!

So we kind of failed at this initial idea. First of all, I don’t think the robot and I count as “a lot of people” (two is more like a couple of people, right?). Although, I must admit, sometimes we do find cool things on the internet.  Secondly, while the intention of this site was to do something cool, it wasn’t really planned out all that well and I guess we (I) sort of lack the effort to make this site reach it’s maximum cool potential.

…now what?

Well, it means that instead of throwing this site away like last season’s jeans, I’m going to repurpose it. Sure, that’s a word. In the beginning I had the domain and tried to relate something to it but, you know, a name isn’t really all that important. This doesn’t have to strictly be about robots, although that would be cool, and I’m sure I could breathe life back into this little project.

So just sit back while I try some new stuff. OK, I feel good about this, don’t you?

WALL E

Have you heard about the latest pixar movie?

Wall E

It’s going to be about a robot. Pretty excellent. It kind of reminds me of the robot from Short Circuit (people will kill me for not knowing his name… something about number 5?). I’m interested to see what the story is behind the character. I feel like Pixar is always pretty good about coming up with new stories.

Anyway, the film is scheduled for a summer 2008 release date.
